ESG Framework

BiON is one of Malaysia’s most established environmental engineering and renewable energy solution providers. The name “BiON” is inspired by, and derived from, the green ecological world of BIO – i.e. life – and the progressive energy of ION – i.e. an electrically charged group of atoms.

Over the span of 40 years, BiON has securely built its foundations and expertise in the successful delivery of wastewater treatment solutions and services for various industries throughout Asia.

More recently, the business has turned its focus to waste-to-energy through the development of biogas power plants – as an Independent Power Producer and as an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) contractor – to generate renewable energy from the treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME).

Environmental

Environmental Stewardship

At BiON, we believe our business activities make an active contribution to the environment.

Through our daily business operations alone, we are contributing towards 7 of the 17 UN SDG:

  1. SDG 6 Clean Water and Sanitation
  2. SDG 7 Affordable and Clean Energy
  3. SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth
  4. SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  5. SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities
  6. SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production
  7. SDG 13 Climate Action

We involve all stakeholders to undertake responsible practices to consider and mitigate any environmental impact from not just our operations but also our day-to-day activities. For example, our company practices a zero single-use policy and do not provide single-use items such as plastic water bottles.

We are dedicated to preserving our resources wisely as the conservation of the natural environment is very important to us.

Social

Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)

We ensure our facilities and operations are workplace environments where our employees’ health, safety and general wellbeing are the utmost priority. We believe that such workplace environments foster a more fulfilling experience for our people.

While we implement robust governance mechanisms, we also leverage strong HSE leadership in our top management to inculcate a deeper sense of HSE discipline and mindset within the organisation.

Over the past 40 years, we have had zero fatalities and zero lost time injury recorded in all our operations.

COVID-19

We have issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in the context of the COVID-19 virus to protect BiON employees and visitors from risk of infection.

Our SOP covers extensive issues from the basic temperature screening and physical distancing to the handling of deliveries, sanitisation, air ventilation etc.

Community

BiON believes in enriching our communities and improving the quality of our societies through any means we can whether it is through monetary contributions or humanitarian efforts. We do this via our CSR projects that contribute further to UN SDGs.

COVID-19

Through the COVID-19 pandemic, some parents have lost their income and may be unable to provide meals to their children. In Malaysia, 99.7% of children in the Program Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) or People’s Housing Program live in relative poverty, whilst 7% live in absolute poverty.

BiON undertook a Happy Kids Meal Project and provided 2,250 meals to children of PPR. We are constantly on the watch for ways we can contribute to society and promoting good health and wellbeing.

Inclusive solutions: Sanitation for all

BiON has partnered with Global Peace Foundation to provide sanitation facilities for the indigenous communities of Pahang. As professionals in environmental engineering and with a longstanding history in wastewater treatment, we believe everybody should have the right and access to a clean and safe environment.

Governance

Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)

We ensure our facilities and operations are workplace environments where our employees’ health, safety and general wellbeing are the utmost priority. We believe that such workplace environments foster a more fulfilling experience for our people.

While we implement robust governance mechanisms, we also leverage strong HSE leadership in our top management to inculcate a deeper sense of HSE discipline and mindset within the organisation.

Over the past 40 years, we have had zero fatalities and zero lost time injury recorded in all our operations.

As integrity is paramount, BiON employees are expected to act in good faith and ensure fidelity, diligence, and integrity on all occasions.

We have in place policies on various matters to mitigate potential compliance and ethical risks. Such policies include:

  • Whistleblowing
  • Workplace harassment
  • Anti-corruption and anti-bribery
  • No gift
